Care Instructions

Merino wool is naturally temperature regulating, breathable and soft against the skin. Its odour-resistant fibres often require less frequent washing than synthetic alternatives.

Cool water and a gentle wool wash will help maintain the softness and performance of the fibre. Always refer to the care label attached to your garment.

    The measure of merino

The softness of merino wool comes down to the fineness of its fibres. That fineness is measured in microns one thousandth of a millimetre. The lower the micron count, the finer and softer the fibre. Standard wool typically measures between 30 and 40 microns. By contrast, merino measures between 15 and 24 microns.

Coarser fibres are rigid enough to prick the skin rather than bend against it, causing an itchy sensation. Finer fibres, like merino, are soft enough to flex on contact, so they sit gently against the skin without irritation.

Within merino, there's even more variation. Our superfine merino sits between 17 and 18.5 microns. It's exceptionally soft and well suited to everyday wear. Our ultrafine merino measures below 17 microns. It's rarer, more expensive and closer in feel to cashmere.

How do I protect my Merino, Possum Merino, garments from moth damage?
    • Avoid spraying fragrances directly onto garments as this can attract moths.
    • In between use, and certainly out of season, store your Possum/Merino/Silk knitwear in storage bags or containers.
    • Some recommend storing your knitwear with cedar blocks, or wiping your drawers with a cloth infused with cedar essential oil, as the scent of cedar repels moths.
    • Employ the use of Clothes Moth traps in the room you store your knitwear. These can usually be found at hardware or garden centres.
    • If you start to notice small holes in your garment, place it in a compression bag in the freezer for 1 week. This will ensure all moth larvae wont be able to survive.
What makes merino wool so soft?

The softness of merino wool comes down to the fineness of its fibres. That fineness is measured in microns one thousandth of a millimetre. The lower the micron count, the finer and softer the fibre. Standard wool typically measures between 30 and 40 microns. By contrast, merino measures between 15 and 24 microns.

Coarser fibres are rigid enough to prick the skin rather than bend against it, causing an itchy sensation. Finer fibres, like merino, are soft enough to flex on contact, so they sit gently against the skin without irritation.

    Is Merino itchy?

Not ours. The prickle people associate with wool comes from coarse fibres — the thicker the fibre, the more it irritates the skin. Our superfine Merino is 18 microns and our ultrafine is 16.9 microns, both comfortably below the threshold at which most people feel any prickle at all. The result is a fabric that feels soft next to the skin, which is why our Merino base layers suit people with sensitive skin. If wool has bothered you in the past, it was almost certainly a far coarser fibre than this.

What's the difference between wool and merino?

Merino is a type of wool—it comes from merino sheep, and its fibres are far finer than standard wool, which is why it feels soft rather than scratchy next to the skin. Where we've listed a product simply as wool, it's a coarser, hardier fibre. That isn't a lesser thing. It's exactly what you want in an underlay, a blanket or a dog coat, where loft, warmth and durability matter more than next-to-skin softness.
