A newborn's eyesight is still developing, and for the first few weeks they see bold, high-contrast shapes far more easily than soft colours or fine detail. Black and white images give them something they can actually focus on, which is why young babies often study them so intently.

Colour vision develops gradually over the first months, but simple black and white designs stay engaging well beyond that, and they make a calm, uncluttered thing to look at together.

Every toy has an age guide in its Usage tab, set by the maker for that particular toy. It's worth following, as it takes into account the size of the pieces as well as how a child is likely to play with them.

We choose toys made from natural and renewable materials wherever we can, with smooth edges and pieces sized for little hands. As with any toy, keep an eye on young children while they play, and check pieces now and then for wear.

If you're buying for a particular child and aren't sure, email sales@nznature.co.nz and we'll help you choose.

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, from seed that hasn't been genetically modified. To wear, it feels much the same as conventional cotton—the difference sits with the soil, the water and the people growing it. Several of our cotton products are certified organic, and the product page will tell you which.

We don't offer gift wrapping at the moment, but we're happy to include a message from you. Add it in the notes when you order, along with who it's from, and we'll pass it on with the parcel.
