Exceptional warmth without bulk

The higher possum content creates an exceptionally warm yet remarkably lightweight knit. This is a luxurious natural fibre knit that feels soft against the skin and performs beautifully in cooler conditions.

Possum merino combines exceptional warmth with a remarkably lightweight feel. Naturally breathable and odour resistant, it can often be aired between wears rather than washed frequently.

When washing is required, a gentle hand wash or wool cycle will help preserve the loft, softness and insulating qualities of the fibres. Always refer to the care label attached to your garment

We dispatch every order from New Zealand with tracked and insured delivery, with Royal Mail completing delivery within the UK.
UK VAT is included in our prices. On orders of £135 or less before VAT, we collect the VAT at checkout and there's nothing more to pay on delivery.
On orders over £135 before VAT, UK rules say VAT must be paid when your parcel arrives in the UK. We're unable to collect it at checkout or prepay it for you, so we take the VAT off your order at checkout to make sure you don't pay twice. The delivery provider will then collect the VAT, and may charge a handling fee, before delivering your parcel.
If you're buying several items, you may prefer to place separate orders of £135 or less before VAT.

Orders within New Zealand are sent by trusted courier services with full tracking and insurance included. We'll send tracking details as soon as your order leaves us, so you can keep an eye on its progress.

More possum means more warmth for less weight
Soft against the skin, made in New Zealand

McDonald Textiles knits this blend in New Zealand, leaning on a higher share of possum fibre for warmth you notice on the coldest days. Mulberry silk adds strength and a soft handle, so it wears well season after season.

McDonald Textiles is one of New Zealand's oldest textile companies, with roots dating back to 1876. Still family-owned, the company combines generations of wool-growing knowledge with modern knitwear manufacturing. Their garments are designed and made in New Zealand using premium natural fibres.

Possum Merino combines fine merino wool with premium New Zealand possum fibre to create a fabric that is exceptionally warm, lightweight and soft against the skin.

The hollow structure of the possum fibre naturally traps warmth close to the body, while merino wool helps regulate temperature and allows the fabric to breathe. Naturally odour resistant and less prone to pilling, Possum Merino often requires less frequent washing than many other fibres.

When washing is required, gentle care will help maintain the softness, shape and performance of the fibre.

Please refer to the care label attached to your garment. Hand wash in cool water using a wool detergent or select a gentle wool cycle where appropriate. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners. Gently reshape while damp and dry flat away from direct heat and sunlight. Do not tumble dry.

Possum Merino Shrug Sweater

Possum merino gets its exceptional warmth from the brushtail possum's hollow fibres. Tiny air pockets act as a natural layer of insulation, trapping heat close to the body without adding bulk. Blended with fine merino wool, the result is an incredibly soft fabric that delivers serious warmth in a surprisingly lightweight package.

Built to last

Unlike coarser fibres that tangle and knot with wear, possum fibres are smooth making them more resistant to pilling, allowing you to enjoy your garment season after season.

A stack of folded knit sweaters in beige, charcoal gray, olive green, and cream, displayed on a rustic wooden surface against a weathered stone wall.

Everything you need to know about choosing, wearing and caring for natural fibres, plus our sizing, exchanges and delivery.

Possum Merino is a uniquely New Zealand blend combining the hollow fibre of brushtail possum fur with fine Merino wool and a touch of silk. This blend is incredibly warm, lightweight, and pill-resistant. It's also an eco-friendly choice—brushtail possums are an introduced pest in New Zealand, so using their fibre helps protect native forests.

The Australian brushtail possum (not to be confused with the American opossum) was introduced to New Zealand in 1837. With no natural predators, numbers grew rapidly reaching an estimated 70 million by the 1980s. The impact on New Zealand's native environment has been significant, with possums threatening the survival of native birds, plants and insects.

Trapping and pest control programmes have helped reduce numbers, and the possum fur industry plays an important role in keeping populations in check. The use of possum fur is supported by both the New Zealand Department of Conservation and the World Wildlife Fund. Choosing possum merino is a small but meaningful contribution to that effort.

Hand wash gently in lukewarm water using a wool-safe detergent. Do not wring or twist. Roll in a clean towel to remove excess moisture, then reshape and lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight. Avoid tumble drying and ironing. Store folded rather than hung to maintain the garment's shape over time.

Avoid spraying fragrances directly onto garments as this can attract moths.
In between use, and certainly out of season, store your Possum/Merino/Silk knitwear in storage bags or containers.
Some recommend storing your knitwear with cedar blocks, or wiping your drawers with a cloth infused with cedar essential oil, as the scent of cedar repels moths.
Employ the use of Clothes Moth traps in the room you store your knitwear. These can usually be found at hardware or garden centres.
If you start to notice small holes in your garment, place it in a compression bag in the freezer for 1 week. This will ensure all moth larvae wont be able to survive.
