About Merino Cotton

Merino and cotton each do something well, and together they do more. Merino regulates temperature and naturally resists odour, while cotton brings softness and easy care. Lighter against the skin than pure merino, it makes an easy base layer as well as comfortable sleepwear.

Merino wool is naturally temperature regulating, breathable and soft against the skin. Its odour-resistant fibres often require less frequent washing than synthetic alternatives.

Cool water and a gentle wool wash will help maintain the softness and performance of the fibre. Always refer to the care label attached to your garment.

Shipping & Local Taxes
  • We dispatch every order from New Zealand with tracked and insured delivery, with Royal Mail completing delivery within the UK.
  • UK VAT is included in our prices. On orders of £135 or less before VAT, we collect the VAT at checkout and there's nothing more to pay on delivery.
  • On orders over £135 before VAT, UK rules say VAT must be paid when your parcel arrives in the UK. We're unable to collect it at checkout or prepay it for you, so we take the VAT off your order at checkout to make sure you don't pay twice. The delivery provider will then collect the VAT, and may charge a handling fee, before delivering your parcel.
  • If you're buying several items, you may prefer to place separate orders of £135 or less before VAT.
  • Orders within New Zealand are sent by trusted courier services with full tracking and insurance included. We'll send tracking details as soon as your order leaves us, so you can keep an eye on its progress.
  • GST is included in all New Zealand prices. If your parcel is genuinely lost in transit, we'll replace or refund it.
Returns, Exchanges & Refunds

If your purchase isn't quite right, you can return it within six months for an exchange, replacement or refund. Simply return it in as-new condition with its original tags and packaging.

    The best of both

A blend works when each fibre covers what the other can't. Merino regulates temperature and stays fresh between washes, but on its own it can be more than you need on a mild night, and it asks for more care in the wash. Cotton is soft and easy to live with, but it holds onto moisture and does little for you once the temperature shifts.

Together they settle somewhere more useful than either. The merino keeps the fabric working as conditions change and keeps it fresher for longer. The cotton lightens the handle, adds stability, and makes the garment straightforward to look after. Most of our merino cotton is an even 50/50 blend, so both fibres are doing real work rather than one making up the numbers.

Which is why it suits the things worn closest to you. Sleepwear that holds a steady temperature through the night, rather than leaving you too warm at midnight and cold by morning. Everyday layers that sit comfortably under everything else without adding bulk.

Soft from the first wear, easy in the wash, and quietly good at almost everything.

    FAQs

Everything you need to know about choosing, wearing and caring for natural fibres, plus our sizing, exchanges and delivery.

    Read All FAQs
What is organic cotton, and does it matter?

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, from seed that hasn't been genetically modified. To wear, it feels much the same as conventional cotton—the difference sits with the soil, the water and the people growing it. Several of our cotton products are certified organic, and the product page will tell you which.

Will cotton shrink when I wash it?

A little, usually in the first wash and mostly in length. Washing warm rather than hot, and drying flat or on the line, keeps it to a minimum—tumble drying on high causes most of the shrinkage people notice. If you're unsure about a particular item, the composition is listed on the product page, or email sales@nznature.co.nz and we'll check for you.

Are your products made in New Zealand?

Many are, and the product page tells you which. Anything made here carries an 'NZ Made' tag — that includes our Merino from Weft and Essence Lingerie, our sheepskin slippers and boots from EB Tolley and Furmoo, and skincare from Nude Kiwi.

Some of our range is made offshore, and we're upfront about that. Silk and bamboo, for example, aren't fibres produced in New Zealand, so those garments are made overseas to our specification. We're a New Zealand company and we make here wherever we sensibly can.

If you want to know the origin of a specific item, look for the NZ Made tag on the product page, or ask us and we'll tell you.

What makes merino wool so soft?

The softness of merino wool comes down to the fineness of its fibres. That fineness is measured in microns one thousandth of a millimetre. The lower the micron count, the finer and softer the fibre. Standard wool typically measures between 30 and 40 microns. By contrast, merino measures between 15 and 24 microns.

Coarser fibres are rigid enough to prick the skin rather than bend against it, causing an itchy sensation. Finer fibres, like merino, are soft enough to flex on contact, so they sit gently against the skin without irritation.

Within merino, there's even more variation. Our superfine merino sits between 17 and 18.5 microns. It's exceptionally soft and well suited to everyday wear. Our ultrafine merino measures below 17 microns. It's rarer, more expensive and closer in feel to cashmere.
